Yes, it must be a form of intentional deceit, not just having a different perception of the same situation.

Which makes me wonder about my friend: she said her family minimized things, but my friend maximizes things. I've never questioned anyone's claims of abuse before but seeing how she mischaracterizes all kinds of situations just put me in a position of not wanting to be her confidante. It's not a good feeling to wonder if someone claiming abuse and trauma is lying. It makes you feel like a bad person with no compassion.

Thanks, Zsababy, I feel like I've got a grasp on it now. I wonder how many victims assume it's intentional? Especially if they aren't good communicators and can express themselves freely.

I know with both parents, there were many times I assumed they were intentionally emotionally manipulating me, however, reflecting on it, I can say we were all poor communicators. My mother has expressed in the last year how much she loves me, she just couldn't or didn't know how to raise me.

I don't blame you for not wanting to be your friend's confidant. It's interesting how easy it is to catastrophize situations. I suppose some of this could be due to the child-like mind that we haven't emotionally matured from.
